Dunkerque was our second trip across the Channel and somewhere whose history we were really quite ignorant about but visiting just before the 75th anniversary of the Dunkerque evacuations we made it our mission to put that right.
We found ghosts of war everywhere (here at the Memorial du Souvenir.)
but especially on the beach. I appreciated the attempt to create beauty out of the horror by mosaicking one of the concrete bunker with mirrors.
Even on a warm and sunny day the wrecks emerging at low tide were chilling. We bumped into Dan Snow filming.
We found art too at the sculpture park and discovered that the industrial wharehouse overlooking the port was actually the new modern art museum (although it was closed when we tried to visit!)
And we found lots of post war architecture.
This trip was our first with the bikes on board so we got busy planning a cycle along the beach and up to the Dunkirk Memorial – the first outing for my new bike.
